Pets and Me: Three Points in My Life
I’m interested in animals, paintings, and electronic gadgets. For this project, I have chosen three items revolving around pets from the museum collection to reminisce about three points in my life.
Blinking in the Sun
Ralph Hedley’s original title for this popular painting was ‘Blinking in the Sun’. A tabby cat sits on the worn stone sill of an old cottage window with cracked glass panels. Despite the weathered surroundings, the cat looks well-fed and content. The painting appears to be set in springtime – a white hyacinth and red tulip are in bloom. An earthenware pot holds a geranium, a very popular cottage plant.
This painting reminds me of my childhood. As a child, I led a happy and comfortable life, much like the feline in the painting – blissfully showered with love and enjoying the beautiful things life had to offer.
When I was little, I kept pets: one cat and two dogs. I was a mischievous child who would graffiti on walls at home and chase my pets around the house.
Last in the Market
Country children often embarked on long journeys to the market, setting off very early. This small boy, accompanied by his dog, has fallen asleep on the carrier’s cart that will take him home at the end of the day. Ralph Hedley noted that the painting was meant to depict the Bigg Market in Newcastle. However, he painted it in his studio on Blackett Street rather than in situ.
Into my teenage years, my dad’s business crumbled, and our family hit rock bottom. Despite the financial hardships, we were reluctant to part with our pets. Although I had little money, my life abounded with fullness and joy. After school and on public holidays, I helped out at my parents’ bistro alongside my cat, transporting fresh food, vegetables, and condiments from the wet market using a shopping cart. During this time, I came to realise that these challenges had made me stronger. I developed greater patience and prudence, both in my studies and at work.
Tamagotchi
Tamagotchi, a Japanese toy, was launched in 1996. Since 2010, global sales of the egg-shaped virtual pet have exceeded 76 million. Users take on the role of caretakers, nurturing their electronic pets to maturity.
Around that time, I just lost all my pets and moved into a small house. Feeding, bathing, and playing with my virtual pets helped me maintain an emotional connection I had with my late pets.
